SUMMER 2020

I lost my job during the pandemic and moved back to my childhood home, back in with my parents. It had been years since I had been in this rural mountain valley town. There was a stillness to most of the world at this time, and the already slow pulse of the town became a murmur.

I got a job doing general labor on a black mold removal project at my former elementary school, tearing apart former classrooms. Summer moved along, temperatures rose to the hundreds, and the lethargy increased.

In this haze, it became difficult to separate my memories of the town, with the town at the present. Tired from the work, the heat, the global present moment, I wanted to lay down in the backyard, under the shade of that old black walnut tree, but it had been cut down years ago.
